\u201cUrban development is about prioritizing between conflicting interests.\u201d<\/em>\nThis quote comes from the Hjerterom for Byrom conference held in Troms\u00f8 on February 13, 2025.\nBecause how do you make everyone happy with building plans?\nThe simple answer is \u2014 you can\u2019t.\n

\nBut with ambitions to create a district that contributes to both livability<\/strong> and a vibrant city center<\/strong>, it makes sense to ask as many people as possible \u2014 what creates livability for them<\/em>.\nThat\u2019s why we\u2019re focused on gathering input from a broad range of voices \u2014 not just \u201cthose who shout the loudest\u201d in social media comment sections.\nOne group we believe is especially important to listen to is the city\u2019s young talents.\nTo ensure growth, it\u2019s essential that young people either want to stay \u2014 or return after completing their studies \u2014 to live and work in our city.\nAnd one day, they will inherit it.\nSo our challenge is to make the city as attractive as possible \u2014 for them.\n

\nOn February 20, 2025, the annual Business & Development Day took place, and Hammerfest Business Association invited 30 students from Hammerfest Upper Secondary School to attend the conference.\nHere, we had the opportunity to host a workshop with the students before the main event began.\nWithout giving them any directions or hints, we simply asked what they miss \u2014 and wish for \u2014 in downtown Hammerfest.\nThe students answered anonymously via their mobile phones using the tool Mentimeter.\nBelow are the responses we received \u2014 where the words shown in larger text were mentioned more frequently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was clear that the students wanted a shopping mall, more stores, and fast food options.\nSome also expressed interest in energy \u2014 although we\u2019re not sure we can meet the request for a nuclear power plant in downtown Hammerfest\u2026\n

\nAfter this first round, we gave the students a short presentation of the preliminary project plans, our four construction phases, and the division of space as we currently envision it.\nWe then split the students into 5 groups and asked them to answer four questions:\n

\n\n1. How can Havnekvartalet increase the desire to live in Hammerfest?\n2. What should Havnekvartalet look like?\n3. What kind of tourist attraction should we create?\n4. What should be included in Phase 4 (the wild card)?\n

\n\nHere are some of the responses we received:<\/strong>\n
